The reluctant glad-hander
In the past, I've paid scant attention to Donald Trump. He's unavoidable now, but I look forward to resuming my apathy someday soon. Anyway, because I didn't know much about The Donald beyond the tabloid headlines (Marla Maples on Trump: "BEST SEX I EVER HAD!"), I've just learned he's a mysophobe (someone who fears germs). That's behind his famous objection to shaking hands with strangers. "I think the handshake is barbaric ... Shaking hands, you catch the flu, you catch this, you catch all sorts of things," Trump told Time magazine in 1999. So, is Trump someone who regularly goes all Howard Hughes on us (as manically played by Leo DiCaprio in "The Aviator")? Does he break into a sweat staring at hotel door handles - or voter hands - for fear of lurking microbes? Sorry, sports fans, but no. Trumps truly hates shaking hands but engages in the barbarity all the time. But he is Purell's #1 customer.
