A most satisfying requital

James M. McPherson, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “Battle Cry of Freedom,” ends his book with an affecting account of a black Union soldier. It was 1865. While guarding Confederate prisoners, the ex-slave recognized his old master in the group. No doubt smiling, he called out a greeting: “Hello massa, bottom rail on top this time!”
