The free ride is endeth

To paraphrase Twain, the report that "information wants to be free" is greatly exaggerated. On Monday, the New York Times began charging for access to its website ($15/mo. for 20 articles, $20/mo. for unlimited iPad access, $35/mo. for unlimited, all-platform digital access). PC Magazine's Lance Ulanoff: "The free Web is going bye-bye. The New York Times decision to throw its content behind a paywall (albeit one with more holes in it than Swiss cheese) is exactly what I expected. Without another consistent and significant source of revenue, no company, not even one as big as the New York Times, can afford to give away its best stuff for free indefinitely. That's not business, it's charity." In other words, get over it.
