Coming home from lonely places
Occasionally, one comes across a passage, a poem or a quote that perfectly captures a personal experience. Twice in my life, I have returned home from an extended overseas sojourn and grappled with an adequate way to convey my off-the-beaten-track experience. I never could. Only now do I happen upon a quote by John Le Carre (doubtless from one of his novels) with the words I've long sought: "Coming home from very lonely places, all of us go a little mad: whether from great personal success, or just an all-night drive, we are the sole survivors of a world no one else has ever seen." Yes, exactly.
