On this day in 1923, the now iconic Hollywood Sign was officially dedicated in the hills above Hollywood, Los Angeles. The 45-foot-tall and 350-foot-long sign sits on the face of Mount Lee in the Santa Monica Mountains. According to Wikipedia, it originally read "Hollywoodland" but the four last letters were dropped after a renovation in 1949. (Here's the Google Earth view.)
