Fanning the flames of intolerance

The big Wallow fire in Arizona is believed to be human-caused. But when Tom Berglund, spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service group managing the blaze, was asked if illegal immigrants were the culprits, he said, "There's no evidence that I'm aware, no evidence that's been public, indicating such a thing." That apparent fact didn't stop Sen. John McCain from slipping into "magical thinking " mode (again). Speaking to the press at the site of the Wallow fire on Sunday, McCain boldly declared: "There is substantial evidence that some of these fires are caused by people who have crossed our border illegally." Except, there isn't. So, the Forest Service is, what, lying? Oh, no, no, no, McCain's office said when confronted with the contradiction. The good senator was talking about a different fire. They didn't specify which one. Five words come to mind: "Liar Liar Pants on Fire."
