Red State Ranting

BEFORE testing the waters today, I couldn’t remember when I last visited a conservative blog. Once upon a time, in a galaxy far far away, the most prominent sites of the species were worth perusing for their insight into Red State thinking. From time to time, I’d even come across a good idea or a point worth pondering.

Alas, those days are but a faint memory. For shortly after Obama’s election, conservative blogs all went insane. Rational thinking and empirical evidence (i.e., facts) became alien concepts to them. And I’m only exaggerating a little bit.

Has anything changed? In a word, no.

A headline on Red State.org, an influential conservative blog, read: “Like it or Not: Mexico is America’s Next Afghanistan.” Say what?

Here’s the story lede:
“With the exception of, perhaps, Texas governor Rick Perry, no public official wants to publicly admit an obvious fact: The United States of America will likely be forced to invade Mexico. It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. The question then becomes: What to do with Mexico after we invade it and wipe out the drug cartels (as much as can be). Does the United States merely return Mexico to a nation state of corrupt politicians, failed economic policies, and lawlessness, or do we annex Mexico and turn it into the 51st state?”
The writer, Peter List, is dead serious. Let that sink in for a moment.

I’ll stipulate that Mr. List is not insane. But his words sure are. One day, conservative blogs will disembark from their long Disneyland cruise in Palin World. Whether it happens in our lifetimes is another question.
