Pyrrhic victory

Sadly, the Senate today killed the DREAM Act, a bill allowing illegal immigrants to apply for citizenship if they entered the U.S. as children. Had it passed, applicants would be obligated to complete two years of college or military service. This humane citizenship path would have been good for America. But a small group of intransigent Republicans said, well, fuck off. The GOP won. But the skirmish reminded me of what ancient Greek general Pyrrhus famously said: "Another such victory over the Romans, and we are undone." Come 2012, Hispanics will remember this day and vote accordingly. Bet on it.
