The light in their faces

PRESIDENT OBAMA has been out in the heartland stumping for his American Jobs Act. Naturally, the photogs have captured many a memorable "reaction shot" from the faces in the gathered crowds. A number have been black faces. Look closely, and one sees a special light in most. Forget about politics for a moment. Contemplate the sales ledger shown above. It contains the names of 118 human beings who were "purchased" as slaves in Charleston, South Carolina, c. 1754. Consider the ensuing centuries of racial ugliness before and after the great civil war to purge our Original Sin. Think of the post-Reconstruction lynchings. Think of the courage and perseverance it took to survive Jim Crow without surrendering an inch of one's dignity. Think of the sacrifices made and blood spilled during the Civil Rights era, all for the simple but elusive idea of equality. Think of the deep scars this excruciating saga has left on our nation; and of those smoldering remnants of bigotry not yet extinguished. Given this cavalcade of history, consider lastly the sheer magnitude of what Obama's presence in the Oval Office means, especially to African Americans. On this, no commentary is needed. The wondrous look on the face of a young student (below) as he listens to Obama speak says it all. Know hope.
