Goosing the fire for ratings

I just noticed that CNN has begun displaying a ticking countdown clock for the government shutdown. Sure, it's a cheap stunt to further hype its self-driven melodrama. (A riveted nation is glued to the television, right?) The clock accompanies the now endless chatter about how disrupting government operations could trigger apocalyptic events and end the world as we know it. (Remember the BP oil spill? We were utterly doomed, right?) None of this is surprising, of course. We long ago arrived at this place where the tv media -- if they could get away with it -- would torch the Washington Monument themselves just to report and hype the resulting news.
