A piece of cake

Libyan no-fly zone: "This is a pretty easy problem, for crying out loud” and what's all the “wailing and gnashing of teeth” about, anyway? said the retired general with the derring-do of someone with no responsibilities for American lives. The now armchair-bound general is ex-Air Force chief of staff Gen. Merrill McPeak. New York Times columnist Nick Kristof -- jonesing for a duel in the sun with Col. Qaddafi -- quoted McPeak for his piece today favoring a NFZ over Libya. “Just flying a few jets across the top of the friendlies would probably be enough to ground the Libyan Air Force, which is the objective,” McPeak said, oh so casually. That's easy to say, general, when you're not the one flying those jets. I find his flippant remarks especially galling because McPeak is a decorated fighter-pilot who flew 269 combat missions in Vietnam -- and lived to tell the tale. He of all people should know better than to give the false impression that flying into harm's way is a piece of cake.
