Twitter, Devourer of Worlds
For the uninitiated, using Twitter is analogous to diving into a wildly raging whitewater river. There’s never a dull moment as you frolic in the digital slipstream, and it’s exhilarating as hell. But you quickly find that it’s virtually impossible to swim back to the saner shorelines of your real life. Yet, somehow, one does manage to unplug and log off at day’s end. But it’s like yanking a bong from a crack addict. That imagery gives you an idea about how powerful the Twitter current is once you’ve assembled your “following” – the tweets of personalities and/or friends that endlessly feed into your homepage. For me, it’s mostly folks who talk politics, constantly. On top of that, finally, is the added compulsion of “feeding” the appetites of your own “followers,” the folks who enjoy what you tweet. So not only do you devour every sugar plum coming your way, you can “perform,” Jon Stewart-like, before your very own online audience, LIVE and in High-Definition. What a product. What a deliciously vicious little circle. Damn, I wish I had thought of it first.
