Republicans, maybe it's time to buy a new coat

Many conservatives extol the virtues of originalism. In all things constitutional, disciples of this political theology hew strictly to what they believe is the original intent of the Founders. Actually, the Framers would probably be flabbergasted at this practice. I give you Thomas Jefferson: "Laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths disclosed, and manners and opinions change with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also, and keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy, as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors." Why, oh why, don't the originalists get this concept? In any event, Jefferson's words may partially explain why I see so many Republicans in ill-fitting coats during the winter season.
