So endeth the Weiner roast

The die was cast for Rep. Anthony Weiner the moment President Obama unsubtly "suggested" that resignation might be a good career move. The NY congressman will step down today, reports say. Eyeing posterity, WaPo blogger Greg Sargent noted that Weiner "is the highest profile figure yet to be doomed by a Tweet." Weiner can only hope that his epitaph won't echo those words. To his credit, Sargent also observed that "this episode demonstrated in a unique way that Twitter can encourage pack political journalism at its worst." Amen. But you can bet the media - now enraptured in all-Weiner-all-the-time mode - will squeeze at least one more news cycle out of this. It's all about the ratings, baby. In the end, Weiner's in-your-face lying undid him. The affair was (probably) survivable had he fessed up immediately to the press, and then grovelled like there was no tomorrow to his pregnant wife, Huma. If she forgives him for the public humiliation (the jury is still out on that one), Weiner should consider himself one very lucky hombre. Mercifully, the Weiner roast is over. Hope you enjoyed it. The media sure did. Check, please.
