Queens didn't get the memo

There is a growing chorus of pundits and members of Congress piously calling for Rep. Anthony Weiner's resignation (they're shocked, shocked that he lied to them about his online sex life). He is increasingly viewed as a dead man walking. Meanwhile, back in Queens, 56% of Weiner's constituents say "gimme a break" and want him to remain in office, according to the latest poll. Only 33% think he should resign. Somebody didn't get the memo. Weiner says he has no intention of stepping down, perhaps for good reason. Despite predictions of his imminent demise (including mine), the voters in New York’s 9th congressional district clearly beg to differ. Fair enough. If Weiner hasn't broken any laws, didn't make a sex tape and his wife doesn't leave him, then he just might survive this. That's a lot of "ifs" for somebody with a record of blatant dishonesty. On the other hand, voters are usually wise enough to keep their eyes on the ball: Weiner's job performance. Being a cad, in their minds, is not necessarily a disqualifier for office as long as he keeps bringing home the bacon. As I've said before, let's just let democracy sort this mess out.
