In the sci-fi movie "2010" (the sequel to 2001: Space Odyssey), the HAL-9000 computer asks, “What is going to happen?” Astronaut Dave Bowman replies, “Something wonderful.”
Well, something wonderful has happened, though you probably missed it. NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft successfully achieved orbit around Mercury at approximately 9 p.m. EDT Thursday. This marks the first time a spacecraft has accomplished this engineering and scientific milestone at our solar system's innermost planet, the space agency reported. How cool is that?
Take a break from Japan’s woes and the imminent war in Libya, and read about it here. The writers at the Sagan’s Brain website also have a good take here. To paraphrase HAL-9000’s closing words in the movie, “All these worlds are yours. Use them together. Use them in peace.” I just wish we could find a way to do all of that right here on Earth.
