A Disappointed Man
Richard Holbrooke, who died Monday, is being deservedly showered with accolades for a lifetime of impactful diplomatic service. “He is simply one of the giants of American foreign policy,” said President Obama. But Newsweek’s John Barry has written what is probably the most honest appraisal of Holbrooke, a diplomatic star who never achieved his dream to be secretary of state. Barry writes: ”He will be remembered publicly as a glittering star. Privately, he will likely be seen as a tragic example of what befalls a government servant who, however brilliant, is never quite trusted to be a team player.” Read the entire piece here.
