Gabriela Mistral (April 7, 1889 — January 10, 1957) was a Chilean poet, educator, diplomat, and feminist. In 1945, she became the first Latin American to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Per Wikipedia, "Some central themes in her poems are nature, betrayal, love, a mother's love, sorrow and recovery, travel, and Latin American identity as formed from a mixture of Native American and European influences. Gabriela Mistral was of Basque and Amerindian descent."
Mistral's haunting poem "I Am Not Alone" perhaps best captures what the Chilean miners must have felt as they awaited rescue (which now appears successful):
The night, it is deserted
from the mountains to the sea.
But I, the one who rocks you,
I am not alone!
The sky, it is deserted
for the moon falls to the sea.
But I, the one who holds you,
I am not alone !
The world, it is deserted.
All flesh is sad you see.
But I, the one who hugs you,
I am not alone!
