"American political discourse has been hijacked by fools and blowhards and opportunists and charlatans and people who seemed cooked up in a lab in the basement of a cable TV network headquarters." -- Joel Achenbach (Washington Post)In his piece, Achenbach continues: "But will Obama's appeal to the better angels of our nature succeed? It hasn't yet. It probably never will. Because the market favors rancor. The technology favors the judgment-rushers, the instant reaction, which by definition can't be terribly thoughtful. The TV ratings favor the furious. What does it mean when the people on the fake shows on Comedy Central are more intelligent and reasonable than the people on mainstream cable news networks?" Sadly, Achenbach's critique is spot on.
