PLEASE, God, let it be true. Bill Moyers may be coming back to PBS. For those of us who enjoy thoughtful interchange on the great issues of the day took a grievous body blow when Moyers, 76, had the temerity to retire. He left the much acclaimed “Bill Moyers Journal” last April. I said it then and I’ll say it now. No, Bill, we don’t care if you want to live the quiet life in historic Bernardsville, NJ to enjoy your evening years, pen your memoirs and play with your grandchildren. You left us utterly defenseless against the likes of Hardball’s Chris Matthews!
According to the New York Times, “He has received preliminary approval for a major grant to return to PBS with a half-hour show with the working title ‘Something Different With Bill Moyers.’” Moyers served in both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. He was LBJ’s press secretary.
Yes, yes, YES – Moyers leans left, as my Republican friends are all too quick to point out. Yes, as the Times noted, he “has often been a lightning rod for criticism from conservatives.” But they’re always whining about something. Had these folks been alive in the 19th century, they would have questioned Founder James Madison’s citizenship because he (gasp!) spoke fluent French. But Moyer’s liberal leanings are a pittance, a pittance, to pay for the unvarnished quality of his views and talent for stimulating intelligent dialogue from which all can benefit, including my temperamental Republican friends.
